Lágrimas Negras

Lágrimas Negras
Cuban Latin jazz pianist Bebo Valdes (incidentally father to the great Chucho, former leader of Irakere) and the young star of Madrid’s vibrant flamenco scene Diego La Cigala, form something of a surprising pair. But listen to ‘Lagrimas Negras’, the fruit of their musical encounter, and their mutual love of melody, their intuitive sense of rhythm and space and their shared Latin culture shine out. United by choice producers Javier Limon and Fernando Trueba, the delectable duo is accompanied by an impressive number of the world’s best musicians from both sides of the Atlantic (including El Nino Josele, Orlando ‘Puntilla’ Rios and Tata Güines to name but a few). Diego and Bebo elegantly pay homage to the work of some of Cuba’s best known composers (Matamoros, Maria Teresa Vera) in this album of just 9 tracks, preferring the old format of quantity rather than quality. It finishes with the offering of a rare pearl, ‘Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar’, the masterpiece by Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes, sung in Portuguese by El Cigala with all his rare flamenco passion and then recited by a distinguished guest indeed, Caetano Veloso and his inimitable voice.
